Google is now indexing the mobile pages of websites

In April last year we experienced “Mobilegeddon” when Google started to change their search algorithms to give preference to websites that were deemed “mobile friendly”.

Google then announced in May this year that the AdWords platform was going to be revamped by 2017 to be “Mobile First“, making mobile ads the primary focus rather than the tacked-on add on it once was.

Like AdWords, Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) is also adopting a “Mobile First” strategy.

So what does this mean?

Simply put, Google will start making the mobile version of the site the primary site that will be indexed.

Google’s official blog says: “We understand this is an important shift in our indexing and it’s one we take seriously. We’ll continue to carefully experiment over the coming months on a small scale and we’ll ramp up this change when we’re confident that we have a great user experience.”

What can you do to avoid a reduction in traffic?

Along with the previous mobile changes mentioned at the start of this Blog, this new change means it is more important than ever to have a responsive website.

If you already have a responsive design you do not have to change anything, but if not, it is highly recommended you upgrade to a responsive design.

It is also worth noting that if you are considering a mobile only site Google have advised: “If you are building a mobile version of your site, keep in mind that a functional desktop-oriented site can be better than a broken or incomplete mobile version of the site. It’s better for you to build up your mobile site and launch it when ready.”
